Description:
Founded in January, 2012 by former TechCrunch reporter Sarah Lacy, PandoDaily has quickly grown to be one of the top news sites covering Silicon Valley and the startup scene.
Like virtually every other news site and blog in the world, PandoDaily is built with WordPress. Unlike the majority of WordPress sites, Pando uses a Responsive Web Design inspired custom theme that adapts on the fly to mobile, tablet and PC browsers.
The design, by Sara Cannon generally works well. As the browser viewport gets smaller, PandoDaily's signature "Ticker" timeline of breaking news mini-posts moves from the sidebar to below the main content. At the same time, the five column "Week in Review" footer reformats as a single column to fit smaller screens.
In my testing, PandoDaily looked good and worked well in the Android and iOS browsers, Opera Mini and Mobile, Firefox Mobile and Nokia's S40 Xpress browser, across viewports ranging from 1680px to 128px in width. However, the site's 3MB page weight will not be appreciated by users who pay for data by the KB.

Description:
Part of the Gothamist network of city blogs, SFist covers local news, food, art, entertainment and events for San Franciscans.
Like the other Gothamist sites, SFist has a magazine style front page that uses responsive design techniques to adapt on the fly to all screen sizes from mobile (left image) to PC (right image). It's one of the few responsive magazine style designs I've seen and it works well and looks good on the desktop and in the Android browser and Opera Mini. However page loading is a bit sluggish with the Android browser thanks to the 4.3 MB page weight. I'm also not a fan of the 300 x 250 px desktop banner add that dominates the page above the fold on mobile devices.

Category: Science & Tech/Apple
Description:
9to5Mac is a popular news and rumor blog covering Apple Inc. The site was the first to report on a slew of new Apple products and features including Siri and the iPhone 4s' dual core A5 processor,
Last August 9to5Mac and sister sites 9to5Google and 9to5Toys (consumer electronics and deals) got a mobile first responsive redesign. It starts out with a simple one column mobile friendly layout and progressively adds things like retina resolution images, sidebars, an animated lightbox and desktop ads. The result looks and works very well with desktop browsers and just every mobile browser I tried including non-Apple ones like the Android Gingerbread browser, the Symbian Belle browser, Firefox Mobile, Opera Mobile and proxy browsers Opera Mini, UC Web and Nokia Xpress for S40. I even got 9to5Mac to load (slowly) and be usable in the ancient Myriad (formerly Openwave) feature phone browser.
The mobile first philosophy pays off in drastically reduced page size. In Firefox 17 on my Linux PC, 9to5Mac's home page weighs in at a hefty 7311 KB ( 2741 KB compressed). In the Myriad browser it's 502 KB, one sixth the size.

Description:
Jolla's new site uses a responsive design techniques to adapt to all viewport widths. It works well in mobile browsers, including Opera Mini, that can handle the site's rather heavy pages.
Jolla Ltd., headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, is developing mobile devices and the open Sailfish OS based on the MeeGo and Mer open source projects.
Jolla's first handset, which will be released in 2013, will be an affordable device with mass-market appeal that will be fully open to developers and hackers to modify and improve.
