ICT4D is an acronym for "information and communication technologies for development" which means using technology, especially computers, web and mobile, to enable and encourage socioeconomic growth and human rights. Examples include the One Laptop per Child Project and MedAfrica, which lets rural users connect to doctors and medical information using basic mobile phones.
Not all projects are successes. FAILFaire aims to help ICT4D professionals and participants learn how to succeed by analyzing what didn't work.

Nature nature.com Founded in 1869, Nature is one of the most respected scientific journals in the world. It publishes original research from all branches of science as well editorials, book reviews and feature articles of interest to the scientific community.
Nature's desktop website got a "responsive design" makeover yesterday and now adapts itself to mobile viewport widths. Unlike most responsive designs which work in both landscape and portrait orientation, Nature seems to expect mobile users to view the site in landscape only. The site's layout looked rather jumbled to me in portrait using the Android Gingerbread, Symbian Belle, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers but was find when I switched to landscape. POLITICO - Top US Politics Site's Mobile Editions

POLITICO is a three year old politics focused daily newspaper distributed for free in Washington D.C. It's widely read by politicians, lobbyists and other D.C. insiders. The paper's website, Politico.com has significant national readership with an Alexa US traffic ranking of 287.
The mobile version of Politico is at mobile.Politico.com (first image). It was launched shortly after the PC one in December, 2007. Mobile devices visiting Politico.com are not automatically redirected to the mobile version. But iPhones (and only iPhones) visiting the mobile URL are redirected to a special "Touch Web" version that can be viewed with other browsers by using the URL mobile.Politico.com/iphone/. The touch version works great with the Android browser (second image) but I experienced some rendering issues using it in Opera Mini and with a Nokia N95's WebKit based browser. Both mobile variants average 40KB, excluding JavaScript which both use but do not require.

Politco's mobile editions are somewhat limited. They do appear to include, with one exception, the full text and photos from all the articles and sections on the main site. The exception is Mike Allen's daily "Playbook" column, arguably the most popular feature on Politico and thus a strange thing to leave out. Other limitations of Politico mobile are the complete absence of reader comments and the removal of all hyperlinks, both internal and external from within news stories. Politco's stories get hundreds of comments, with the discussions often as interesting as the original articles, so why not include them, even if only in read-only format. The same goes for links, Politco's stories are loaded with links, almost entirely internal ones to related articles and background information. I don't understand why Politico would want to strip out links, especially internal links, which help keep readers on the site.
I applaud Politico for recognizing the mobile web's potential and providing attractive, well organized mobile sites with lots of content. But I'm disappointed by the "dumbing down" of the mobile versions by the removal of important features like comments, links and Mike Allen's column. FactCheck.org's Mobile Site Debunks Politician's False Claims

FactCheck.org is a non-partisan, non-profit project from the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. It researches and debunks false claims made by U.S. politicians and political action groups in campaign materials, speeches and in promoting legislation.
FactCheck has played a significant role in recent U.S.elections. In the 2008 presential campaign Factcheck.org flagged multiple falsehoods by both candidates, including Obama’s statement that McCain’s Social Security proposal would cut retiree benefits by 50% and McCain’s claim that Obama lied about his association with anti-war activist Bill Ayers.
FactCheck is available in a mobile formatted version at factcheck.org/mobile/. I like that virtually all the desktop site’s content is available in the mobile edition. However, the size of the pages (the homepage is 151 KB) means the site will not load on most non-smartphones. In spite of the increasing popularity of iPhones, BlackBerries and other devices with full web browsers, only 37.3% of U.S. mobile web page requests come from smartphones. Devices like the venerable Motorola RAZR V3 or MetroPCS’ entry-level Nokia 1006 account for significant amounts of traffic and can not handle pages much over 20 KB. Given that FactCheck.org’s content is mainly text it shouldn’t have been very hard for the site’s designers to follow the example of news sites like CNN, the BBC and even small town newspapers like the Elmira NY Star-Gazette and built a mobile site that could accommodate all browsers.
