New Site Added to the Wap Review Mobile Directory
One of the ways that companies try cut costs is by making it hard to reach a customer support representatives. Some of the tricks they use include hard to find support numbers, forcing callers into obtuse automated help systems and long hold times.
If you have ever been frustrated trying to get support for a product or service, GetHuman is the site for you.
Created in 2006 by Kayak.com co-founder Paul English, GetHuman is a crowd sourced directory listing the best customer service numbers for thousands of companies around the world. In many cases GetHuman is able to provide a number that bypasses self service and takes you straight to a live representative. Where that's not possible, GetHuman tells you which buttons to push or phrases to say cut quickly through the interactive voice response (IVR) system and reach a human. The site also lists company's email support addresses and live chat URLs.
GetHuman's mobile webapp works well in smartphone browsers and with proxy browsers like Opera Mini. The relatively heavy page weight may be an issue with legacy mobile browsers or for users on metered data plans.
The mobile edition of Microsoft's Bing search engine (m.bing.com) was updated recently with a bunch of new features borrowed from Bing's desktop page and Google's mobile search webapp including:
- Background image of the day with floating "Explore" menu
- Search suggestions appear as you type
- Location enabled on Android and iOS
- Image search results as a grid of thumbnails
- Tabbed results pages with tabs for All, Images, Shopping, Local etc.
The new interface shows up on the iPhone and iPad and Android, WebOS, BlackBerry OS 6 and Windows Phone 7 devices. Other browsers, including some very capable ones like Opera Mobile and the Symbian Anna, bada and Nokia N900 and N9 browsers, get Bing's rather plain legacy mobile site.
The new Bing version seemed quite responsive even on a older, low spec HTC Magic Android phone. It's certainly attractive and even a bit of fun to use. The only thing I don't care for are dark gray on black tab labels which I unnecessarily hard to read.
BestParking.com is a handy mobile webapp for finding the lowest prices on parking nearby. It lets you search for the cheapest and and nearest parking garages and lots in 30 cities and at 79 airports.. According to the publisher the app saves users an average of $16 everytime they park.
You can either choose an airport from a list or select a city and either enter an address or pick a neighborhood. You tell BestParking your arrival time and how long you intend to park and it returns a list of open spots and prices at nearby parking lots and garages. Results are displayed on a map and sorted by distance with the best prices highlighted. You can also sort results by price. Clicking a result in the list brings up a page with hours, click to call number and a detailed map.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) recently launched a mobile web site. Features include package tracking, a post office locator with information on hours and last mail pickup times and a couple of zip code search tools; one that gives the zip code for a given address and another which tells you what city a zip code is located in. For procrastinators there's also a page listing the last date to mail holiday cards and packages to various destinations.
For me the killer feature on this site would be the one that claims to return a a list of the nearest mailboxes, with mail pickup times, for a given address or zip code. This feature worked OK when searching by zip code. But whenever I tried to use it with a full street address it just took me back to the mobile USPS homepage when I clicked the Search button! There is nothing more irritating than painfully tapping in an address, street, city and state on a ten key phone keypad and than having your efforts rewarded by absolutely nothing! The looping back to the homepage bug happens randomly on some of the other search forms on the site too.
